| Happy Christmas Eve! |
[Dec. 24th, 2009|11:57 am] |
I just finished putting my fruitcake in the oven. I know the fruitcake is the butt of many jokes in the holiday season, but I think mine is pretty good. Coldy and my dad always complement it, at any rate. I'll probably make more cookies later, since there are a couple of types I'd like to make still. True procrastinator that I am, I finished my wrapping today, too.
A nice surprise came in the mail today. destroyah_des sent me an interesting-looking gardening themed book along with her homemade card. Thanks, Des! The book seems like it'll be a fun read.
Anyway, to all of you on my friends list who celebrate it, an early Merry Christmas! (Or those of you in Australia, not so early!)
Edit: I almost forgot to add this. I first saw this joke in email or LJ oa couple of years ago, but I re-lived this to an extent during my wrapping this morning, since this house has so many cats in it, so I thought I'd share it again. Those of you with cats should be able to relate.

Dear Santa...
Dear Santa,
This year I've been busy!
Last Thursday I put gum in cheetoy's hair (-12 points). Last Saturday I caught a purse-snatcher who stole pikacharma's purse (30 points). Last Monday I broke purrsia's X-Box (-12 points). Last Sunday I bought porn for lsduncan (-10 points). Last Wednesday I ruled Iran as a kind and benevolent dictator (700 points).
Overall, I've been nice (696 points). For Christmas I deserve a Sony Playstation 3!
Sincerely, Coldwin |

| 'tis the season to stuff your face |

I say this after spending a good chunk of the last couple of days in the kitchen making goodies. Today I made a batch of homemade chocolate walnut fudge and cream cheese strawberry cookies. Coldwin made a batch of rice krispie treats with candied cherries in them. (He fell victim to clever supermarket marketing and bought the tubs of candied cherries just to make the recipe on them.) Yesterday I made chocolate chunk cookies and chocolate mint cookies. I still have a few more things I want to make, too. And to top it all off, I'm drinking pumpkin spice ale as I type this. Mmmm junk food.
On the fandom front, I finally bit the bullet and got started on the editing process of my Nano. I should have the first installment up before too much longer. Speaking of fandom, I read some interesting meta about fandom and eras in it this morning from a link on a recent metafandom post. It got me to thinking about how several years ago, the most action, so to speak, fandom-wise was on Yahoo groups. It occurred to me that those are so dead now that I never even looked through what there was on Yahoo groups when I got into the DWD fandom last spring. Back when I'd joined the Voltron fandom in 2004 they were still active enough that I looked then, although those lists are mostly dead now, too. The Prince Lotor and Captain Keith list might as well be renamed the "Happy Birthday" list, since that's all that people ever seem to talk about on there, responding to the automated birthday reminders when they go out.
So for kicks I went to look for DWD lists, and sure enough, the ones I found seem to be either RPGs or dead (and some may even be dead RPGs), just like most of the other small fandoms I'm familiar with. It's kind of a shame. Sometimes I feel like an old geezer mumbling about the damn kids on my fandom lawn, having gotten into fandom as a whole back in the late '90s, when things were so different. Not that I'm saying they're bad now, mind you, just different.
A couple of times I've thought it might be fun to try getting back into RPing since that seems to be a popular thing to do in the DWD fandom, but then I remember from past experiences in the Thundercats and Voltron fandom how easily RPGs generate stupid drama (you know what I mean, people taking stuff that happens in game personally and throwing hissy fits, people power-playing their characters or playing them horribly OOC and pissing other players off, etc.) and tell myself not to bother. |

Can somebody please tell me why there is a new version of "Death at a Funeral" coming out next year when the original only came out in 2007? From watching the trailer, it looks like the exact same movie except with Chris Rock and a black family*. Hell, Peter Dinklage is even playing the exact same role!
What is the point??? Put bigger names into it and hope it does better at the box office? The first one was great, why remake the exact same movie with (mostly) different actors???
*Both versions were penned by Dean Craig, so theoretically, it's the exact same script, which it certainly looks to be from the trailer. |

| Fairly productive day |
[Dec. 19th, 2009|09:08 pm] |
I've had a pretty good day overall today. We're housebound here because of a big snowstorm. At last check we had about a foot of it. I tried taking pictures, because the view off our deck down the side of the mountain looked really cool, but my camera decided to misbehave and got handed over to my tech man (aka Coldwin) to fix. It was dark by the time he got the bugs out of it and got it working properly. Maybe I'll be able to get some nice pictures tomorrow morning, though!
I'm finally getting back into my drawing again. I posted a pic on DA today. I'd actually sketched it back at the end of November, but I didn't get around to inking or coloring it until today. I'd like to get back in the habit of doing a little something involving sketching or coloring every day again. I feel like it's gotten so much harder after a long break. The end results don't seem to have backslid much, but it still felt like it took me longer than it had been back when I was in the habit of working on it constantly.
It has been fun getting back into fandom stuff, though. Aside from the drawing, I also made a batch of Christmas-themed DWD icons from the It's A Wonderful Leaf episode. Since it's one of my favorite eps anyway (I know, Bushroot fan that I am, you must be shocked to hear that, lol!) I had fun with that. Coldy and I watched a few other DWD eps also since it had been a while. I'd like to get an update in on my Bushroot site soon, but I keep procrastinating, telling myself that I'll wait until I have fic to add to it. Of course, I'd have fic if I'd stop putting off the dreaded edit of the completed part of my Nano fic, but I can't seem to sit down and just do it. Part of it also is that I'd like to work on other storylines. However, I worry that people who follow my fics will get annoyed with me if I start posting new WIPs when I have old ones like Tension Convention still unfinished. I've wondered if part of my slump on my un-posted WIP Bushroot/Rhoda fic is that I don't have anyone nagging me to work on it, though, other than myself and occasionally Coldwin.
Also, I'm missing writing the quick and dirty (pardon the pun) Citrus Taste type fics, but then I feel bad about indulging too many side ideas with all those long WIPs on my plate. Then again, I do miss writing Bushroot/Liquidator, and I can only seem to write them in short fluffy and/or lemony fics. |

| Back, again, for real this time |

So I was all intent on catching up, and then it doesn't pan out because my computer decides to start acting up when I go "hey, you know, sims is running kind of crappy on this, how about an upgrade to see if that helps?" Lots of bitching and cursing and complaining to Coldwin (and, admittedly, a little more dabbling in Sims) later, and here I am again. The computer has more ram now, but to make a long story short, we bought a new video card that should've been awesome, but my motherboard wouldn't run it, so we had to drive back to Morgantown to return it to Best Buy. Unfortunately Morgantown is like an hour and a half away from where we live.
Also, my nephew was staying with us for a few days. Here's a funny thing about that regarding Coldy and his infamous lack of a sense of direction: he assumed that the college campus he had to pick him up at was in Morgantown, but it turns out it wasn't, so the day we returned the video card we drove all the way there basically just for that, and then had to get my nephew at the campus he actually lives at, which is in Glenville and is like an hour and forty minutes from Morgantown. D'oh!
Needless to say, all that mundania made it hard to keep up online also. Oh, and my Sims game I was playing got all glitched, so I had to end the first game with aging on. It sucked because I'd gotten my Bushroot clan to the third generation as teenagers. Posy had already died and was a ghost, and Bushroot was ancient because he skipped out on his first death with a death flower. I did get a couple videos of the deaths before the game got screwed up, though. What pissed me off and made it unplayable for me was when Ivy's husband Christian got glitched. First he turned invisible, and then the game just up and deleted him. He was in all their relationships but totally vanished out of the household. I couldn't see or select him and his slot was just gone. This was after I'd moved out Rose and her family (and her drunk loser husband who had two other romantic interests besides her, who were both old ladies, lol!) so there wasn't even a good point to go back to and get him back without a lot of backtracking.
Oh, and I found out something funny about the Bushroot sim. When Posy died he was all heartbroken and mourning for two days, but as soon as the "mourning" moodlet wore off he got wishes to flirt and fall in love. Well, at least he let her get cold in the ground first before trying to pick up the other old ladies in town. The "hopeless romantic" trait apparently means falling in love with anything that flirts and getting needy as soon as the steady source of lovin' is gone.
Anyway, now I'm off to do more catching up here on LJ. I never got around to that before. |
